Falafel Balls

The other day, I made a special lunch for myself- a falafel sandwich! Ever since 5th grade, I've always wanted to try falafel, and I finally got to try it! I first tried it all by itslef a few days before my sandwich making exploration, and I was so excited to try it, that I made an announcement to those present in the room that it was a big moment in history- I was finally trying falafel!

What is falafel? Falafel is a Mediterranean food that is made of fried chickpeas and spices. I've read that it is called the fast food of the Mediterranean.:) I first heard about it from my AWANA (Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed) book in the fifth grade. In the story line of our scripture memory verse book, the characters in the book traveled to Israel and got to try falafel. They ate it in a pita pocket with tomatoes and lettuce. And THAT is what I made the other day.:)

Tomatoes, pita pocket, and lettuce

What do all of the ingredients, stuffed into a pita pocket, make? Scroll down!

The finished product!
Isn't it pretty?? All I did was, literally, stuff everything into the pita. I put the lettuce down first, tomatoes second, and then, the star of the show, the FALAFEL BALLS!!! If you recreate this recipe at home, don't put the tomatoes down first, because it will make the pita soggy. Next time I make this, I will cut the recipe in half. It was a big pita with a lot of different foods in it, and it filled my stomach up fast. So next time, I will cut the pita in half before I stuff it.:) Also, while the recipe was good, it wasn't amazing, so I think next time I could try two different things.
1.) Put some of Trader Joe's spicy hummus inside the pita for some extra zip
2.) Sprinkle some of my mom's BBQ grilled onions into the pita
Either one of these should add a bit of specialness to the sandwich. Give this recipe a try (make your own modifications) and tell me how it went!:)

Where to buy the ingredients I used-
Whole wheat pita pockets and frozen falafel balls- Trader Joe's.
Lettuce and tomatoes- my mom's produce co-op.

Thanks for reading!:)
